iPad Backup Defaults to Mac, not iCloud

When I connect my iPad to my Mac via USB-C, the Finder shows that backup is done to my hard drive. I want it to backup to iCloud.

When I select iCloud backup, then hit apply, it backs up to the iCloud.

The next time I connect, it is back to back up data to the Mac.

I have never had this issue until recently - which includes a new Mac - Mac mini Pro.

When you connect an iOS device to your Mac, it assumes you want to manage it with your Mac.

Unless you want to sync data from your Mac instead of using iCloud, there is no need to connect the device to your Mac.

I can't ever remember it not always wanting to backup to the Mac when I connected it. It's been a long time since I connected any iOS device to my Mac for anything but trying to help someone here. So, that default behavior might have changed since I last used it (decade, maybe).

You should be able to set the device to backup to iCloud in the Settings on the device.
