Permanently empty trash

I can put unwanted emails into the trash but I can’t permanently delete emails. How do I empty the trash bin permanently. My gmail says I have over 13000 emails in trash and I will stop getting emails in about a month. Thanks

Google Mail by default saves discarded email to the Archive Mailbox folder. To delete discarded mail, you need to change your mailbox settings:

Settings > Mail > Accounts > [Your Gmail Account] > [Account] > Advanced > [Move Discarded Messages Into] Deleted Mailbox
