Suddenly since a few weeks ago my attachments in Mac Mail (Version 16.0) do not show as preview anymore but instead as icons only. This is bothering me as I always want to check that I actually attached the right PDF.
Does anyone know how I can force Mail to show it as a document instead of an icon?

I tried this - several times, by unchecking all, then restart the Mac again.
It does not work.
But what I found now is that if I look at the initial screen (see picture below: on the left all the emails headers are shown and on the right the details of the clicked email is shown) - there it appears alright - a single page PDF shown as it should.
But not once I go back into any specific Email (see the 2nd screen shot below) - then I see only the PDF icon. Which is annoying.
I have the same need.
This solution doesn't work for me. I've unchecked all the Mail Privacy Protection options to no avail... One-page attachments are still icons, even after rebooting the Mail app.

I have recently learned that the recipient will see the full one-page image, not the icon, although the originator sees the icon.
My one test proved it correct. I sent a message to myself.
Unfortunately, one can't verify that the intended attachment has been attached to a message, so I guess we're supposed to use the file name for that.

Yes, this is correct. However, it does not address my problem.
Previously, when attaching a single-page PDF, I could view it directly in the email before sending it. This is no longer the case. So I wonder what has changed?
Check your settings in "Privacy". If you have "Protect Mail Activity" check off, uncheck it or Block Remote Content, uncheck it.
Go to your email supplier and if you are running IMAP then they should be on the server.
