new imac, 1 Tb hard drive, when i connect my time machine to transfer files, it says too big after calculating. its over 2 Gb. how do i just transfer my photos and documents etc.

Migration Assistant is not selective, when it migrates
The wise thing to do is migrate everything then go back and move the data you do not want into the Trash. This will be the safest and fastest method. Prior to turning on the new machine, connect the Time Machine External Hard Disk. Then startup the new machine, it will get to a point where it asks if you want to migrate, select YES and follow the on-screen prompts. This will take 1-2 hours depending on the amount of data. Then go back and Trash what you don’t want.
I assume you mean TB (TeraBytes), not GB (GigaBytes)...
You'll have to be selective about what you tell migration assistant to bring over.
I don’t know what to do. I had a 2012 iMac, now the new model, I don’t know how to get info off the Time Machine. It’s not easy. I can’t find photos on it or files.
You can tell it not to migrate applications. You can selectively migrate specific user accounts if there are multiple users on the original machine.
Do you still have the original Mac?
