my email account on my iphone is a POP account and my email accout on my macbook air is an IMAP account. I cannot sync the email between the iPhone and Macbook Air.

I had a problem about 2 weeks ago with someone hacking into my address book of me email account. I had to delete my email account on my iPhone 15 and add the email account back in. I was able to get to my email, however, I cannot sync my email between my iPhone 15 and MacBook Air. I discovered today that on my MacBook Air my email is set up as an IMAP account and on my iPhone 15, my email is set up as a POP account. Should they be the same to allow syncing between the two?

iPhone 15, iOS 17

Yes, they should both be IMAP accounts. Normally when you set up the mail account on the iPhone, it sets it up as IMAP by default. Did you get an option to choose which type account you wanted when you added the email account on your phone?

You will need to delete the account from Mail, then set it up again. If it defaults to POP and doesn't give you an option for IMAP when setting it up, then here is a trick:

  • When setting it up deliberately use the wrong password and the setup will fail, but on the top of the screen you will then have an option to choose IMAP or POP. After you choose IMAP, make sure to enter your correct password, then all should be well.
