Broken RAW support for Panasonic GH5 II under macOS Sequoia

This is just a continuation of the problem I already stated previously here and still persists with macOS Sequoia 15.1 (Build 24B83).

And thanks to everyone pointing out that I could use e.g. Adobe's DNG Converter or a third party image editor - Yes, I know, I am aware of that and that's what I've been using, but that is not the point. I don't care for some "workaround". What bugs me is that this clearly is some failure on a software engineering/(unit) testing level, as the support for these .RW2 files was working at some point in the past and then broke because some change was not tested thoroughly enough. Makes me feel like I'm back with the guys in Redmond...

The ones I posted open in Preview.

Here is the sample gallery I found. See if they open for you.

  • I found the images from your screenshot in that gallery. They don't work either.
  • Also, I don't really care for some example gallery. I already posted an image for testing purposes.
  • What version of macOS are you on? Are you sure you aren't using Monterey again?

  • FWIW, every camera is different.

... yes, that's basically the point of raw files, so that the manufacturers can pack their own features into those files.

  • The Panasonic GH5 II is not listed as supported.

Except, yes it is listed in that very same list you posted the link to as "Panasonic LUMIX DC-GH5 II". Please use a simple Cmd+F search to verify your claim before posting it.

I am using an M2 Mac Mini Pro w/32 GB with Sequoia v15.1. All of the RW2 RAW images posted so far in these threads image correctly in Finder as icons. No image appears in Quick Look (black window). None appear correctly in Apple's Preview where all are half transparent (checkerboard) and half red. They do appear correctly in Affinity products.

Yes, same here, although I can't confirm for Affinity programs. However, programs like Pixelmator Pro also fail to open these images in a similar manner, which makes me suspect that the problem is somewhere within Core Image.

The images from DPReview posted by dialabrain use firmware v0.4 and the image posted to Google Drive uses firmware v1.00.

There is something other than the firmware version variance going on with these observed limitations though it is not obvious. What we don't know is if a camera vendor provides certain data to Apple and RAW support is implemented for that camera model, if the camera vendor provides subsequent updates to Apple that are incorporated into the current (at that time) operating system. We also do not know the quality control process in use by the product team(s), and it is easy to blame that, however convenient.

Just to test that support worked at least at some point in the past I tested the images on an Intel iMac with Ventura:

And, just to show in this tread the problem on Sequoia as well:

And in case the compression makes the text unreadable: Here the screenshots on Google Drive.

PS: @dialabrain Notice how all of the file names in window title bars are left aligned? ;-)

I have a different understanding of the term "supported". If we reduce it to "The Finder is able to display the embedded JPEG thumbnails from the raw file" then yes, one could claim they are supported. However, my understanding of a camera format being supported is that I can actually open up those files using Preview or some other Core Image based image viewer/editor or simply having a sneak peak at them using Quickview. Have you tried that as well? Have you even taken a new look at my original post linked above (where you confirmed the bug back in January)?
