How can I output audio and visuals from Apple4k tv to Xbox S? HDMI doesn’t seem to work.

Hi. For several years I’ve used an XboxS, an old Yamaha AV receiver and Panasonic plasma tv to get HD films etc in 5.1 sound. The Yamaha doesn’t have HDMI, so the Xbox HDMI output goes to the TV and the Xbox audio output goes via optical to the Yamaha. It works well.

I’ve now got an Apple 4kTV. I’d like to connect it to the Xbox via HDMI so that I can still use the Xbox and the Yamaha to get 5.1 sound and HD visuals to the Panasonic from the Apple TV. I’ve tried and tried to adjust settings but with no joy. Any suggestions gratefully received. I can’t afford a replacement for the Yamaha that has HDMI.

If it can’t be done with the kit I have, is there something cheap like an ‘HDMI to an HDMI and optical’ converter that could sit between the Apple and the Yamaha for the audio and between the Apple and TV for the visuals?

Whether the Xbox can or cannot split the audio from the Apple TV is would be better asked in an Xbox dedicated forum. Once the video signal leaves the Apple TV, it's out of its hands.

What exactly happens on the xbox? Does it not output any audio through the optical port?

If so, that may be a limitation of the Xbox, not something related to the Apple TV. It may only be able to output its one audio through the optical port, but has no way of extracting audio from the HDMI input signal.

With that said, an HDMI Audio extractor, may be a better option, and will allow you to bypass the xbox entirely.

I have indeed posted the same question on the Xbox community, with no answer so far.

I posted here too because I wondered if there was a particular setting(s) I had to select on the Apple tv to solve my issue, because there are a lot of audio visual options. Once I’m looking at what I think is the relevant Xbox settings page, instead of seeing the Apple TV picture, all I have is a blank black box and it says there is no HDMI input. Which made me question the Apple output to Xbox input ‘handshake’.

No settings on the Apple TV for that.

It just sends a signal to the Xbox directly like it does a TV.

More likely something on the Xbox not correctly detecting the signal from the HDMI input port.
