laptop drains battery randomly/intermittently

I'm running Sonoma 14.6.1 on my MacBook Air. For the last month or so, the laptop has been dying overnight randomly. I cannot detect a pattern whatsoever.

Common scenario:

I watch maybe 30 minutes worth of streaming content from a full battery, then put the laptop to sleep and close it for the night. Next morning, about half of the time, the battery has drained fully overnight. Half the time, next morning, it's at about 2/3 full battery. My behavior is the same.

Obviously, I'd rather this didn't happen. Having to log into several accounts every other day or so is cumbersome and annoying.

Any help is appreciated.

You do not have the latest version of the MacOS. You can update to that and see if the issue is resolved.

If not, or if you don't plan to upgrade, it is likely that you have background processes running. Some processes do run in the background even while the laptop is sleeping. It isn't necessarily a bad thing to allow those processes to run, but they do drain the battery. By the way, if you have any utilities installed like anti-virus, "security" software or packages, anything that "monitors" the network, VPN, etc. any of these can continue to use power after you put the laptop to sleep.

You can embark on a bit of a detective hunt to find the process or processes, but it is also reasonable to simply continue to use your computer the way you like to. In that case, why not just connect the laptop to a charger (power supply) overnight? Then you don't have to waste time finding the culprit and each morning it will be fully charged.
