Accidentally "located" the wrong file for a song, whose "original file could not be located"

Hey y'all! I made a mistake and don't know how to correct. I was trying to play an album that I downloaded onto my hard drive (not available on streaming -- Cindy Lee's Diamond Jubilee for those interested!) and I was prompted with:

The song "..." could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?

I proceeded to "locate" the file in the correct folder (that I had moved manually -- whoops!) and one by one, I was able to restore the file directory for this album. However, I made a mistake and "located" an incorrect file for one of the songs.

I can "Get Info" and identify the file location that Music is using for the song, and I can see that it is pulling the incorrect file ("Baby Blue" instead of "Dreams Of You"), but I don't know how to change the location of the song that Music is using.

Does anyone know how to resolve this issue? I just want to change the "location" that a song in Music is tied to.

Thanks for reading -- any suggestions are welcome!

  1. Make a copy of the file that you've misconnected.
  2. Delete the original version of the file, and empty the trash.
  3. Relink the item in the library to the correct file.
  4. Rename the copy as needed, and if necessary connect the right library item to it.

Consolidate files copies items located outside of the media folder into it, and relinks the library to the new copy. It doesn't remove any files from the original location and cannot fix broken links.

monkeymutant,

Many users, myself included, have faced issues since Apple transitioned from iTunes to Apple Music. Despite numerous attempts to find a solution through AppleCare, I was advised to manually locate hundreds of songs. Perhaps I can clarify this issue or help expand on it.

You can consolidate all files in your library. Open Music on your Mac, go to File > Library > Organize Library and select “Consolidate files.” This action keeps the original files in their locations while creating copies in the default folder.

Regarding your .wav file, it should play locally on your Mac, but may not be compatible with many external hi-fi systems and peripherals. You may have also noticed the absence of metadata or album cover art, which is common for .wav files. If you cannot drag the filename to the Music icon or Media folder, I recommend referring to:

- Apple Support: If songs are missing from your music library after turning on Sync Library

- Apple Music Users Guide: Problems playing music or audio

Check the operating system you're using and the model year of your Mac. Are you an Apple Music subscriber? Is the "sync music" box enabled for your devices? Review your import format settings. With your .wav files, ensure you're not mistakenly using a different codec such as AIFF or ALAC instead of lossless audio (see "About lossless audio in Apple Music" on Apple Support). Pay close attention to the terms as the syntax has been worded with care and in some cases is misleading. Additionally, be cautious with the HEIC audio format—hopefully someone can clarify that further.

As a long-time Apple user since my first Apple IIc, I hope to continue as an Apple user in the future. monkeymutant, I hope this information is helpful, and consider investing in an affordable external DAC for optimal two-channel lossless listening, especially while enjoying higher quality 24/44 audio soon.
