Time Machine backups lost after upgrading to Ventura

I upgrade to Mac OS Ventura (13.6.9) a couple weeks ago and just noticed that Time Machine (TM) is not running as usual. Not a real problem as the schedule likely just needed to be turned back on, but upon noticing this, I realized that when I enter Time Machine to find old files, TM does not recognize the many years of backups I have of my iMac. The TM files are stored on an external disc, and the files are all there, but they don't show up when I enter TM. I can go in manually and extract files, but that's not ideal. How do I "link" my previous backups so TM recognizes them?
