ITunes scrubbed my IPOD

My better half has had an ipod for about 15 years. She is not technically minded and the Apple account details are lost in the distant past. However when I connected the device to a new laptop machine all the content was removed from the device

I now recall warnings about this kind of behaviour by Apple software but for crying out loud, a default delete! I understand why so many people will not go near an Apple device

I assume this is not a retrievable situation?

Presumably you no longer have the computer previously used to load content to the device, or a backup of the same. I'm assuming an older iPod with a hard drive or solid state drive rather than an iOS device here. With the latter you are SOL. You will almost certainly have ignored a warning message asking if you wanted to replace what was currently on the device with the contents of the local library. If you say yes you are taken at your word. The only other remote possibility is that something happened that corrupted the library on the device making it unreadable so it has been treated as blank. In the first case the files will have been erased from the system, but might be recoverable with unerase software, in the second instance they may still exist in a set of hidden folders that you can copy them from to rebuild a working library. See Recover media from an iPod - Apple Community for detailed advice.

Thank you for taking the time to respond. The device is an Ipod mini - a solid state device. I can confirm there was no prompt about removing files on the device, as soon as I clicked on the device icon in the menu bar the deletion happened without warning let alone a confirmation request.

A lesson learned. We have a few Apple devices around, all old so we shall replace them with something more likely to comply with EU consumer law. And of course, spread the word of this experience as widely as we are able.

Again, thank you for your time, a shame Apple do not have your level of interest in their customer experiences.
