Why are some Birthday icons grey and others blue on my Calendar?

iPhone 13pro, IOS 18.01

I’ve just noticed in my Calendar that some birthdays collected from Contacts show a grey birthday parcel icon whilst others show a blue calendar icon. What’s the difference? Can I make them be the same icon and colour? Thanks.

Are you sure that all of these birthday events are generated from your Contacts app? Might some be from a manual entry in your Calendar app?

When I activate the Birthday calendar using the Calendars > Other options I see a grey birthday parcel icon. I do not use this automated calendar and prefer instead to enter the birthday events for family and friends manually.

For my manually added birthday full-day events I also see an icon which might be confused as a parcel (or birthday present) icon but it is in fact the new square calendar icon and bears to colour of the calendar to which I have added it in my Calendar app.

These calendar apps to the left of an all-day event are a new feature added to the Calendar app and were introduced in iOS 18 and macOS 15.

Hi David,

Thank you for the reply. Yes I understand the difference on the two ways to add a birthday. I’ll need to double check but some picked up from my Contacts show grey and some show the new blue calendar icon. So they seem to be muddled. I’ll just have to have a closer look. Yes I colour coordinate my different types of calendar but there are anomalies. I just wondered if the update to IOS 18 had changed things. Many thanks.
