Final Cut Pro 10.8.1 Vizualizer Freezing and Other Bugs on MacBook Pro M1

I upgraded lately to 10.8.1 and since then, Final Cut Pro visualizer regularly freezes. It will just play a couple of frames and then freeze. Sometimes copy-pasting effects between two clips stops working as well.

All in all, I regularly have to stop (often force-stop) FCPX to restart it. Using and iPad with sidecar seems to make things even worse.

I tried disabling the "tap to click" and "force tap" options of the trackpad, to no effect. It keeps freezing and bugging. I sadly didn't keep a copy of the previous version I was using (lesson learned!).

Hi Tom,

Thanks for your help. After resetting the preferences the other day, I'm also getting an error message upon starting up Final Cut Pro, which says that the follwing Audio Units are uncompatible and won't be used:

Apple: AURogerBeep

Apple: AURoundTripAAC

I don't know if this could be related or if I should remove them?

Further down it seems to be saying you have over one thousand apps installed, which appears to be excessive?

Do as Ian recommended, and see if it helps.

Also: there used to be a problem with "three finger drag". Try turning that off, in

System Settings->Accessibility->Pointer Control->Trackpad Options...

Any changes?

I have just realised that I don't really know what you mean by the "visualiser".

Are you saying that FCP freezes when you play the timeline and watch it in the Viewer?

As only 2 people have mentioned it I assume it is a problem limited to very few people and would therefore be more likely caused by some peculiarity of specific systems or put another way, there is something different about your computer setup or modus operandi.

Incidentally what percentage of free space have you got on your drives? You should aim to have around 20%.

Download Etrecheck, run it and post the report.

Scrolling down the first thing that jumped out at me is that you have CleanMyMac which is suspected of causing just such symptoms . . . crashes, slowdowns etc.

It needs thoroughly removing.

If you have Chrome installed, that also needs removing.

Thanks a lot Ian, I've uninstalled Chrome and Cleanmymac. And after a few hours, it didn't freeze once. So it may have been one of these two the culprit!

By the way, why does it say over 1000 (I saw like 799 Apple and 250 non Apple)? Actually, I have only 100 apps installed.

I don't know. It puzzled me as I was fairly sure you couldn't have that many.

I didn't see Chrome mentioned on the Etrecheck report as I was skimming through it but mentioned it just in case you had it.

If you want a browser similar to Chrome but without its power-hogging problems try Brave.

Try deleting the preferences.

As you launch FCP hold down the Option and Command keys until a window appears asking whether you want to delete the preferences.

Click Delete.

Thanks, I will try that. But I have custom presets (effects) and also specific export settings. Is there a way to save these and reimport these, or will I have to recreate all manually?

So I did delete the preferences, disabled the trackpad, and it still freezes. Any idea what I could do?

Same situation with FCPX 10.8.1 on intel Mac Pro 2019. Totally unusable, went back to 10.7.1
