Going back to Ventura from Sonoma.

After upgrading to Sonoma on M2 Mac some apps were behaving erratically including Mac mail and my keyboard and mouse. I installed Ventura on a 2nd Volume which runs without problems. I would like to retrieve the space taken up by the volume containing the redundant Sonoma. If I re-format the entire drive can I Safely re-install apps and data from the Ventura (sub-volume) time machine backup?

Delete a volume

If you want to delete a volume, including the macOS and all other data on that volume:

  1. Optional: Make a backup of the volume that you're deleting. After you delete the volume, you can use this backup to restore your files from that volume.
  2. Start up your Mac from a volume that you aren't deleting.
  3. Open Disk Utility.
  4. From the sidebar in Disk Utility, select the volume that you want to delete.
  5. Choose Edit > Delete APFS Volume from the menu bar, or click the delete volume button (–) in the Disk Utility toolbar.
  6. Click Delete. If the volume is part of a volume group, delete the volume group when prompted.

Having Deleted the Ventura Volume effectively made Sonoma the Only working Operating System

I probably should have explained the whole process. Following your advice I tried to delete the Sonoma volume using disk utility in Ventura. It would not allow me to do that because Sonoma was the main volume and Ventura was on a "sub" volume. So in Sonoma I deleted the Ventura volume leaving only the Sonoma volume making Sonoma the only O.S. at that point in the process.

I next booted from a Ventura USB installer which enabled me to delete the Sonoma volume and wipe the entire drive clean. I then installed Ventura so I ended up with a clean install of Ventura as the only operating system which is what I wanted to achieve. Finally I restored files and settings from the Ventura backup.

Thanks PRP, all done without a problem. Ventura now running with clean install and apps and data from Ventura backup.

I had two volumes, one with Sonoma and one with Ventura. I deleted the Ventura volume in disk utility, and the Sonoma volume (the one I wanted rid of) could only be deleted from the utility option after startup from usb Ventura installer. The option to erase the whole disk is in a tiny box top right of the screen and not obvious. Easy when you know how! Thanks again.

Hi Old Toad. No I have not, but always willing to listen to advice. Having read of other people experiencing the same sort of problems with Sonoma especially with Mac mail, having one app not supported by Sonoma, and not having the same problems on a second Mac still using Ventura, I decided to go back to Ventura and postpone further upgrades for the time being.

This seems exactly the Opposite of what your said you wanted to achieve
