Apple Podcasts removing unplayed pods from feed

Ever since the second to last update downloaded on my iPhone, pods that I have not listened to yet are randomly disappearing from my feed because they are marked played. Even if I go in to a podcast ( that magically got marked as played even though I did not play it) and mark it unplayed so it shows back up in my feed, it will sometimes mark itself played again. I listen to so many podcasts so it’s super difficult to track and remember which ones I have listened to now because they keep disappearing from my feed.

The last update was offered soon after the penultimate one so I thought that might have a fix, but no such luck. I currently have 18.0.1.

The issue is still not resolved, but my new workaround is to download every podcast each morning. Then I look under downloaded pods and use that as my feed. As soon as I play one, I remove the download so it disappears from this feed. Still a bunch of work is required because you have to ensure a brand new pod didn’t get magically marked as read, which makes me not see it and miss downloading it. I have to repeat this in the late afternoon too for the second round of pods that come out every day. It’s still a huge pain, but this way I don’t “lose” any - it’s a more thorough way of tracking until Apple fixes their problem.

Here are a few steps that might help resolve the issue:

Check Your Settings: Go to Settings > Podcasts, then make sure Refresh Every is set to something frequent (like every hour) to ensure your feed updates properly. Also, try turning off Remove Played Downloads, as this might be causing the episodes to disappear from your feed after they’re marked as played.

Reset Syncing: Go to Settings > [Your Apple ID] > iCloud, and toggle Podcasts syncing off and then back on. This can sometimes fix sync issues.

Reinstall the App: Try deleting and reinstalling the Apple Podcasts app to reset it, as it can clear any cache-related issues that may be causing the marking error.

Submit Feedback: If the issue persists, visit feedback.apple.com to report the bug to Apple. Their support team actively reviews feedback for future updates.
