iOS 18, Photos app, no dark mode?

In prior versions of iOS, the editing of a photo (or video) was in dark mode. This was really handy if you were in a public space (ie: audience) and needed to send a quick edit. iOS 18 Photos app has editing in bright/white mode -- which I found out is very noticeable bright white, which really is a problem in the above scenario.

Is there a tunable somewhere to place this in "dark mode" when editing? I looked under settings.

Otherwise, has anyone noticed this change as well?

While editing a photo, under (…), “Appearance” lets you choose a light or dark background for editing, independently of the system light/dark mode. Either the option was just added, or I wasn’t able to find it till now. I found this question while trying to look it up myself.

I don't see one.

Apple's iPhone User Guide says: "If your iPhone isn’t working as expected, you can try restarting it by turning it off, then turning it back on. If turning it off and on doesn’t fix the issue, try forcing it to restart.":
