As you know for the slightly more serious photographer, the photos app on IOS 18 was destroyed. Its ability to see the Recent (Camera Roll) photos as an album was removed. This was an essential feature and now that it's gone the Photos app is useless. What is the best replacement? A replacement app should be able to view albums and treat Camera Roll as a independent album. Advice is appreciated. Thanks.

That is probably why that mass of photos appears in a random order regardless of how you press that Sort button.

Yes you can create an album that shows only device photos. But there is a trial version available where folks can explore and evaluate the app against their needs.
Smart move. I wish I had known to do this. Now I’m stuck with the “new” Photos format that appears to have been designed by a 5th columnists from Android.
Darkroom is not free, only "free" to try.
Then stop telling people to use an app when you are well aware there is no iOS app available.
Adobe Lightroom does not do what the old photos app does in ios17 and before. It is not helpful to suggest people use something that is different.
