iOS 18 mail won’t download yahoo mail in background until I open the Inbox

In IOS 18, my new yahoo mails don’t download until I open the apple mail app. The badge will say I have a number of new emails, but they don’t start downloading until I access the inbox. This worked until the upgrade and all I’m still set to Fetch every 15 minutes (yahoo doesn’t allow push) like before.

Problem persists with Yahoo account, after update to iOS 18.1

Emails are not downloading, until I go through the app. This is very frustrating.

Indeed, but this is general information. That doea not answer the fact that the mail app does not fetch email in ios18 as it did in previous versions. I have the same issue and all settings are just like before updating to ios18. The issue lies with the maill app not something else. I have several other email accounts also set to fetch and they work properly. The issue is only with yahoo accounts…

Did anyone else see the fact that when on wireless and charging, the yahoo accounts work perfectly fine? At least for me they do, everything is being fetched and downloaded as usual, but only when on wireless and charging. So this is the issue, I believe that the app is in some kind of low power mode (the phone is not) so this is what Apple needs to fix…

I tried, but it's still not working for me, irrespective of being connected to WiFi or being in charge mode. Only way to get the email is via the Yahoo Mail app. Last update in Apple mail is like 18 hours ago. When Mail is open, it goes into a frantic loop of "checking mail" "updated" "checking mail" "updated", without actually being able to download anything.

Again, this is just for my Yahoo account, all others work fine.

I contacted Apple Support about this problem today and they had never heard of the problem before. A senior advisor wanted me to reset my iPhone and iPhone and set them up as new which I refused to do. I already deleted and re-added the mail account which didn't help.

Like everyone else here, my Yahoo Mail only downloads in the background when the phone is charging. It's basically behaving like I have "Automatic" fetch set, but I have "15 Minutes".

I only had trouble with Yahoo mail, all other accounts were behaving as usual after iOS 18 was installed.

This is my experience:

Behaviour before iOS 18.1 was installed:

  • Mail app would not download any Yahoo emails (but show the number of new emails in the badge or in the count inside the Apple Mail app). Maybe they would show up the next day, and this leads me to think that the issue is somehow related to charging the phone, which I usually do overnight). Something like this was reported by digitalDreamRenderer in a previous post, but just plugging in the phone wouldn't work for me.
  • When going to the Yahoo mails and swiping down the screen, it would trigger an endless loop of quick "updating", "updated", "updating", "updated"... . Actually, in the end (after a minute or so of the loop going on) it would report "Error downloading email", reporting an "Error POSIX 60"
  • Other emails (Gmail, Hotmail, Outlook, etc) were behaving as usual

Behaviour after iOS 18.1 was installed:

  • Yahoo email is checked every 15 minutes and messages actually show up in the Apple Mail app. If a mail is received, but the 15-min window hasn't expired yet, swiping the screen down and releasing causes the new emails to be downloaded (even waiting some time, like 10-15 secs with the app open causes the messages to download)
  • Other accounts behave normally (they always did)

I am not sure if the notifications are working fine, though. When new emails are downloaded I don't see any notification badge. But this might have been always the case, I am not 100% sure. This is true for all email accounts, so it might be a matter of changing notification settings.

Email - Fetch vs. Push Differences

Email clients, such as the Mail app on iOS devices, use either Fetch or Push to retrieve new emails from email servers. The primary difference between these two methods lies in the initiation and timing of email retrieval.

Fetch

  • Initiated by the client (email app): The email app periodically connects to the email server to check for new emails, downloading them when available.
  • Timed-based: Fetch intervals can be set, such as every 15 minutes, 1 hour, or daily, depending on the email client’s settings.
  • Slower response time: Fetching emails can take longer since the client needs to actively connect to the server and request new emails.

Push

  • Initiated by the server: The email server proactively pushes new emails to the client (email app) as they arrive, without the client needing to actively request them.
  • Real-time notification: Push allows for immediate notification of new emails, as the server sends updates directly to the client.
  • Faster response time: Push eliminates the need for the client to periodically check the server, reducing the time it takes to receive new emails.

In summary, Fetch is a client-initiated, timed-based approach, while Push is a server-initiated, real-time notification method. The choice between Fetch and Push depends on individual preferences and email usage habits. Some users may prefer the immediate notifications of Push, while others may prefer the more controlled, batched approach of Fetch.
