I am still seeing an issue with macOS 15.5 with Canon CR3 HDR-PQ images. There has been some "progress" though: the QuickLook thumbnail is now entirely black and the ImageThumbnailExtension no longer consumes excessive CPU.

I cannot be derogatory about Apple as they take down my replies! But there are many words I would like to use which could prompt Apple to resolve the issue. Suffice to say it is unacceptable after such a long time and many OS releases in the meantime. Extremely painful for photographers and graphic designers.
Apple support got back to me last week indicating that the engineering team was able to reproduce the problem that I initially reported last November. Hopefully, this will result in a fix in an upcoming Sequoia maintenance update.

While I did see some changes related to thumbnails in 15.5, they did not address the issue that I had reported (in November) which Apple Support eventually confirmed. So far, I don't see any further Sequoia maintenance updates, but that may change.
I suspect if these issues are not fixed soon, we may have to wait until macOS 16 sometime in the fall.

As of 16 August 2025 this is still broken in macOS 15.6.
I've tried many (if not all) the suggestions kindly provided by users in this forum thread (eg: icon size smaller than 84x84), deleting com.apple.finder.plist relaunch Finder, etc) but none of them fix the problem or provide a viable workaround.
Apple's quiet removal of features is disturbing. If there are too many features in macOS for the in-house programmers to handle, then hire more programmers, please - rather than pursue this incremental and relentless dismantling of macOS. At this rate, macOS will soon be as awful as Windows 11. What alternative do I have? iPadOS is less capable than Windows 11.
This is probably the only way. But I have a lot of files in different folders, and it's not very convenient to convert. I hoped there would be a fix in 15.0.1, but nothing has changed. Thanks anyway!
You mean they actually blocked third party thumbnail previews on purpose? What would be the rationale, if any? Safety?

Is there any Nikon software you can use. Like the NX Studio.app?
This appears to be fixed! Must have happened with the 15.2 update.
Mine was also fixed with 15.2
The indexing suggestion is IMHO hogwash. It's not the root cause of the problem.
I'm running 15.2 The problem persists.

Maybe, although not much better, Adobe will develop its own operating system.
