Mail not working on iPhone after iOS 18 Update

Hi guys,

After updating my iPhone from iOS 17.7 to 18, I encountered an error with my work email. It's showing "IMAP server is not responding."Our mail server uses TLS version 1.1. Does iOS 18 support this version? Can you confirm?

None of this advice is relevant to this issue. As I replied to someone else above, the very same mail account can send mail using iOS mail app - which means the phone can authenticate the account AND TLS works. The issue is the the iOS and iPadOS mail app fails to get new mail from imap servers. This is a bug. . It’s very disappointing to see Apple make a mistake in such a primary function.

I have. As I have two mail accounts with the same provider and only one has problems, Apple cannot say that the solution must come from the provider.

On the phone I was told that they are working in it. Should I believe them? But Even if I do not believe them, I have no other way than using another app and waiting.

I strongly believe that we need, all of us, to contact them. The more complains they have, the better for us. But we must not accept that they say that it is our or the provider’s mistake. We all have a tablet where our mail functions. We can all bring at least this as argument. It is not also very logical that so many mail accounts have problems just by updating the IOS. So if they tell you that it is the provider’s problem, it is up to you (to your arguments and your patience) to tell and insist that this is not the case and make them accept it.

I think that the issue has not yet reached the ‘press’. That would help us a lot, I think, as for the time being we are complaining between ourselves.

I did wait until 18.1 and STILL this issue persists. So now I have an essentially bricked iPad, since email is its primary use. I’ve been deleting accounts, adjusting settings, and re-adding them for 2 days now. Sadly, I’m used to this extreme inconvenience because I have to do this when mail server certificates change anyway since Apple doesn’t let you trust new mail server certificates. Unfortunately, adding accounts back doesn’t seem to fix this latest Apple-induced FAILURE.

iOS 18.1 release didn't fix the issue.
I suspect it somehow related to having non-ASCII (non-Latin overall) symbols in folders' names as it was mentioned by someone earlier, but not 100% sure.

Nope. Has nothing to do with non-Latin chars.

it’s not fixed. I had an iPad on 18.1 that I migrated to a new iPad. All my mail showed up on the new iPad but no new mail has been fetched since. The bug has to do with a faulty fetch new mail from imap process.

Ok. I found the problem on my side!

The 2 accounts that where not working where using IMAP folders with some specials characters in their name.

No problem with iOS 17 and many years prior that. And no problem with other mail client ... but they makes the connection fails with iOS18.

After I renamed thoses folder (and changed all my setting on all my different clients...) ... it works again!

Millions of people have upgraded and not experienced this problem.

You might not have noticed the news today.

millions of Rogers network users in Canada did experience this issue. Plus there are numerous tech blogs bubbling about it.

It seems to me that TWO big regressions are active in this release - iOS mail client has some funky bugs with imap prefixes; and, there’s this fetch mail bug also.

the OP may well have a separate issue with the TLS 1.1, but this ios/ipados 18 mail app issue is growing and already pretty big.

apparently ipadOS is bricking iPad pros also. Thankfully, I didn’t experience that bug.

OK, also here, IMAP stopped working on my Iphone after upgrade to IOS 18.

Ipad remained working on IOS 17.

Installing another mail client on the Iphone fixed the issue, clearly Apple changed something in their Mail app.

Had contact with customer support a few times, but what strikes me is that they are not aware of anything that changed!

I also used self signed certificate for years. After playing around for a while I decided to replace them with Let's Encrypt certificated.

Then it instantly started to work again and the error messages on the server side were gone, indicating the client had difficulties with the self-signed certificate.

So Apple, please fix the self-signed certificate support again and, AT LEAST, inform the public and your helpdesk people that something has changed so people like use are/can be informed.

Lacking information and transparency here is killing!
