I get it. You’re welcome. I leave you with this last thought. If you’re near an Apple Retail Store make an appointment and ask them to check the serial number and if Best Buy had previously sold the computer. something just doesn’t sound right. I’m not sure Apple Care has access to that information. An Apple Store genius or store manager can see the history of the machine. I’m a former Apple Store manager and I have my suspicions.

In August, 2024, I purchased MacBook Pro M3, 18 GB 14" laptop (November, 2023), with Sonoma 14 already installed. I set it up myself, instore, with Geek Squad observation. I discovered the incorrect number while entering all my preferences in all the apps. The Geek Squad tech saw it. I entered my correct number, checked it, but could not delete the wrong one, nor could the tech. We tried everything. At home, I spent several hours on the phone with Apple Support+, to no avail.

I have owned several Apple products since 2011.

Its not uncommon for people to add phone numbers to their account at checkout at apple.com and forget about them later. I know I did just that last year when I added my sisters phone number so she would get pinged when the phone I bought was ready for pick-up since I was not going to be around. I just realized to day it was still there, when looking at the place in settings on my Mac mentioned.

It's supremely unlikely the phone number existed on the purchased Mac for any reason before they got it and was able to be added to their account. Its just not possible. More impossible if this is a brand new Mac and since there's no eay to add it directly in Settings on a Mac in any way shape or for.

Phone numbers change over time. It may have belonged to something else at the time when it was added.

Regardless, it should be able to be removed from Account settings at the Apple Online store website as suggested.
