Automatically increment formula when adding a row

When I add a row with various descriptors and a value in the next to last column, how do I get the last column to automatically increment the total value? I'm using the SUM col1:collast. But, I have to update it manually every time to have it display the total.

Hi Michael,

Good catch!

If I understand your reply, try this

Formula in C1 is SUM(B$1:B1)

Fill Down.

Add another row at the bottom and enter the new value in B:

The formula automatically fills down.

To answer your question about Header and Footer rows, you don't need them using this method. But yes, They are special (not simply the first and last rows).

When you need then, create them here:

Or here:

Thx for the reply, but I'm afraid I'm more confused. Do the terms header and footer denote special rows that I have not specified? Or, are they just the first and last row? I'm keeping a running total. C2 should show SUM B1:B2. C3 is SUM B2:B3 etc. When I add a row and enter a value in B the formula in C should be the new total. Another way would be for each new row Sum C up to this point. But, what will happen to the previous cells in C when I add a new row?
