cannot rename playlists in Music since OS 14.6.1 upgrade

The method control-click on the playlist name brings up the edit choice and the new name is inserted, but it does not take. Is there another way to rename? or a bug inserted by the OS 14.6.1 update?

Experiencing ALL of these issues as well. Very chaotic behavior:

1) Able to rename playlist in playlist view, but it will not change in left sidebar. Restart of system and app, and no changes are saved.

2) Unable to create new playlists, nor delete existing playlists.

3) Dragging songs into existing playlists does not always keep after restart. Tested this several times.

I am not an Apple Music subscriber, and use the app to sort manually imported music...for 15+ years. Extremely frustrated.

I suspect that this problem is related to album artwork. I only have problems with naming playlists and metadata updates for playlists which don't have auto-artwork assigned - i.e. they are grey. I only use the auto-artwork for playlists - i.e. the one that's a 4-tile of random artworks from the playlist. For the last two or three years artwork for albums, playlists and playlist folders has become increasingly buggy. I only use Music in Songs view with artwork always showing. In rough order of occurrence the following problems started to occur:

  • for artwork automatically retrieved by Music the first track's artwork was different from the rest;
  • on popping out the playing next panel, artwork for tracks is often blank (white). Ditto the history panel. Switching between next and history usually fills them in;
  • The ability to paste images as artwork disappeared at some point. Sometimes it can be made to work but it's frustratingly inconsistent and different from the way it used to be. The only way to consistently add artwork now is with the add artwork button;
  • when in songs view with artwork always displayed scrolling in the window creates horizontal white lines across the artwork image for artwork images coming into the window from the bottom or top . The lines can be cleared by moving the cursor anywhere in the window level with the lines and they usually disappear of their own accord after a couple of seconds after scrolling has stopped;
  • ditto above for vertical lines when scrolling horizontally, although this is rarer than the horizontal case;
  • the automatic artwork for smart playlists which is a 4-tile of random artworks from albums in the playlist sometimes does not generate. There's no pattern to this that I can see. Most of the time of works but sometimes the playlist artwork is just grey. (The playlists have albums). It can happen on creation, after editing the name or not re-create after a smart playlist goes from empty to full after editing the rules;
  • new playlist folders are generated with a red folder image, not a 4-tile selection of random albums in the playlist folder. This seems to be the default case now. Older playlist folders are OK.
  • now- I can't rename playlists which don't have artworks assigned - i.e. their artwork is grey even if there are albums in the playlist.

I've reported all the above as bugs to Apple, some of them many times.

Safe mode did not help. So then a new playlist was created and succeeded. But, note visual differences in image attached. The original playlist was created some years ago and as content changes, the list is renamed. The newly created list has color and text in image and accepts edit changes to the name. So it appears that a new playlist for older playlists that need renaming must be created. Easy to do, puzzling why, some aspect of OS 14.6.1 changed something or required something the old playlist did not have. Thank you for the suggestion which assured me there is no glitch in the OS.

Something is very broken ...I thought I was losing my mind. I'm having the same problems and despite scouring the internet and refining queries, over and over, couldn't find anything related until your post.

Firstly, I have had similar difficulty renaming playlists, though I've found that moving another playlist in-and-out of a folder sometimes seems to force a refresh in the interface. Very hit and miss.

Secondly, I have the same type of problem trying to rename genres. Interestingly though, the changed genres are written to the actual files and embedded in their metadata (checked in Finder), but the changes are not showing in the Apple Music browser view.

Also getting the dreaded beach-ball since the last update. Haven't had that for years.

I'm a bit cautious about deleting plists. Do you know what preferences get reset when I delete the plist. I assume it won't affect the database or any meta data.

Nothing in the library should be affected. If your active library isn't in the default location you may need to reselect it. If you have some non-default options for say Keep... and Copy... or star visibility etc. you may need to reset those.

I believe I have discovered a workaround...

Tonight I had four playlists to change and found that if I backspace out the text I do not want and then type in the new text, it worked. Selecting and deleting and pasting or typing the new was not working even though the edit line read what was intended. Just backspace and then typing, and that worked.

I stumbled onto a fix for this, on Mac. I can't promise it'll work for you of course, but it worked for me.

In Apple Music, create a playlist folder. Drag the smart playlist you're unable to rename into this folder. Check to see if the name was fixed. If it wasn't, fix it. Then drag it back out.

This solved the problem for me, one smart playlist at a time.
