Can I download my entire Apple Music/iTunes library to my PC for offline access?

I have a large iTunes library - some ripped from CDs many years ago, and some from Apple Music. I have decided to give up on iTunes on the PC as it freezes so often (see other posts from me). A lot of the iTunes library is downloaded so that I could sync to my old iPod and Shuffle (which still works fine) as these will only sync with music that has been ripped from CDs or purchased.

I have loaded Apple Music OK and can see my library (as it was backed up in the cloud) however it is all in the cloud. If I want to sync (using Apple devices) to my iPod and Shuffle is it correct that I need the files in the Apple music folder on the PC? Is there any way to access this in Apple Music, or do I have to copy everything from the iTunes folder (or download?) I have tried setting the Apple Music folder location to the existing iTunes location, but that doesn't seem to work.

Thanks for any thoughts, and sorry if this has been asked before and I missed it.

Hi,

When Apple Music was first installed and launched it should have detected any existing iTunes library in the standard location, converted that to a new Apple Music library, complete with references to your local media, and then ignored the old library thereafter. Apple Music for Windows at this stage still seems to lack vital features of iTunes, such as the ability to rip CDs, manage multiple libraries, or allow automation via scripts to manage complex metadata edit. Over the years iTunes/Music has shown an occasional issue during an update when the new library doesn't get rebuilt properly. When this happens the library can appear empty, or with fewer tracks than expected, lost playlists, or content that should be stored locally is treated as being in the cloud. See Empty/corrupt iTunes/Music library after upgrade/crash - Apple Community for more on this. Of note is that if you have a subscription to Apple Music or iTunes Match you may not initially notice any discrepancy, particularly as Apple have deemphasized the distinction between local and cloud items over the years. It is also worth noting that updating the location of the media folder doesn't cause the app to re-catalogue what is in that folder.

Depending on when things went wrong you might want to revert to an older version of your Music database, or revisit the migration from iTunes to Apple Music, possibly fixing the iTunes library first, or look to simply bring the local library back up to date by importing any local media, and then downloading what remains in the cloud.

Assuming the tracks you want to reintegrate into the library are stored locally it should be a case of adding the media folder to library, which Music should merge with the cloud content, retaining date added info, ratings, play counts, playlist membership, etc. Nevertheless I would advise backing up the library database before you start, and test by importing one or two albums first to see what happens. Alternatively you can select batches of cloud content and download by right-clicking, but this will take additional space in the active media folder. See Add and download music from Apple Music - Apple Support. An easy way to streamline this process is to create a smart playlist with the rule Location is Not on this computer limited to say 100 items. You can then use Ctrl+A to select all items in the list, right-click and Download, do something else while the selected items are downloaded and eliminated from the list, then rinse and repeat.

The Apple Music application, should have automatically imported your iTunes Music library if it was in a regular location, so all your music should already be local to the PC and not in iCloud.

If it created a new library instead of using your existing iTunes Library for some reason, you can close it down, and re-open it while holding the shift key and then point it to the iTunes Library.itl file so it can load it directly and all its associated music.

No, you should not need to copy anything manually.

Phil0124,

Thanks for you reply, but that doesn't seem to have happened in my case. The iTunes folder is in the normal place (Users/user/Music/iTunes/..) and I also have an Apple Music folder created in the same area (Users/user/Music/Apple Music). The .itl file is in the iTunes folder, but has not been updated since I loaded Apple Music. If I look at a file in Apple Music which I know that I have loaded from a CD, Apple music says that it is stored in the cloud, and is not linking to the file on the PC (so I can play it fine, but can't load it onto my iPod.)

Using shift while opening Apple Music doesn't give me any options and loads Apple Music as normal - is there another way?

turingtest2,

Thanks for the reply. Very much appreciated. It does seem that for whatever reason, Apple Music has not recognised my previous iTunes library, even though everything is 'standard'. It was working fine on iTunes with no errors, but as noted I decided to move to Apple Music because of the 'freezing' issues.

Following your comments I have found I can re-download files from the cloud into Apple Music and they load fine onto the Shuffle using Apple Devices, and it has retained the play count etc. but that now means that I have two copies on my PC - one in the iTunes library and one in the Apple Music library. I won't delete the iTunes versions just yet in case something goes wrong with Apple Music! I have been using iTunes since ~2005 so disappointed that I am having to redo all of this following the freezing issues which started last year for me.

Thanks
