unable to update through itunes on Windows 10 PC

when extracting the iOS 17.6.1 software it states unable to update due to space restrictions on designated drive. This is for iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 13 as well. Have the same problem with both devices which suggests to me its PC issue not actual device issue.

" The iPhone could not be updated. The disk you are attempting to use is full.

Removing files and emptying the recycle bin will free up additional space" is the actual error message for both iPhones.

iPhone 15 has no apps it's just used as a phone only and has 21.1GB used of 1.02TB used

iPhone 13 has apps but has 72.35GB of 512 GB used

I'm a bit perplexed by this.

PC space/Drives are as follows

D: Data has 915GB free (100%)

E: Recovery is 1.74GB free (12%)

C: Windows is 4.36 GB free (4%)

Disk 1 partition 1 is 260 MB free (100%)

Disk 1 partition 4 is 980 MB free (100%)

No other Disk or Partitions.

iTunes backups are stored on the system drive, normally C:\. Unless you've opted to backup to iCloud iTunes will want to backup the device before updating it. See Relocate iOS device backups for a method to move the backup data to your D:\ drive. Review the rest of the Make a split library portable user tip for advice on organizing the library on that drive too.
