Apple Pay not working on my Mac

I have a MacBook Pro running Sonoma 14.5. After filling out all the information in Settings for Wallet & Apple Pay, I am still unable to use Apple Pay at websites in Safari. When I try, a window pops up, and the Touch ID circle briefly appears then disappears. The only active button on that window is Cancel. I also have an iPhone and Apple Pay works fine there. What am I doing wrong?

The problem isn't the ability to add cards to Apple wallet but the ability to use it in Safari.

As others have said that whenever they go to use Apple Pay in Safari it'll show the Apple Pay menu but at the bottom where the touch ID circle is at the bottom it'll say 'processing' then stop without any other prompts or my having pressed on touch ID. After 30 seconds it'll error out saying that it couldn't process the transaction. This is for Apple card and my personal CCs.

Let’s try the following,

Create a new admin out, then log out of your current account.

Log into the new account and start to add a card. A message should appear about another Apple Pay user. Stop there and cancel trying to add a card.

Log out of new account and log into your old account and start to add a card. A message should appear about removing other users Apple Pay. Say yes delete other Apple Pay.

Restart computer and try to add a card to Apple Wallet.

I've been having the exact same issue. On my iPhone and iPad, Apple Pay works without a hitch via Safari, Apps, or in the case of the phone, a double click on the side button. The same for my Watch, no issues.

However, on my iMac (Intel, so no Touch ID) and my MacBook Pro (M3 Max with Touch ID), it absolutely refuses to work. I'm a former Apple Expert and I've checked every setting possible. This only started in the past month or so, my guess with a MacOS update that has a bug. I'm running Sonoma 14.6.1 (23G93) on both machines.

On the MacBook, TouchID works fine for passwords, other autofill, but not Apple Pay. On the iMac, I should get a confirmation alert on my Watch, and that never appears.

There are no other accounts or no other users.

This almost certainly has to be bug within MacOS to be causing such an error.

It works in Safe Boot! And I noticed that while Safari is waiting for TouchID, if it loses focus, the fingerprint sign disappears. So I'm thinking some kind of window manager I'm using might be the problem. I'll try to filter out all apps and come back with the result.

PS: I'm having problems paying, not adding the card. Yes, I'm using a VPN, but even after a fresh restart and no VPN i'm facing this issue. As I mentioned above, I believe to be some utility I'm using.

Thank you, Jeff.

LE: Weird enough, it works after a normal boot too.

I'm using Codeium for Xcode, which creates a "floating" window and that seems to be causing the problem. It probably messes with windows' focus and Safari doesn't like it too much, thus disallowing Apple Pay when it doesn't have "full window focus".

While I don't know if this is a bug of any one of the apps, it's an unusual behaviour overall nevertheless. Anyway, it's good to know, thanks for debugging it with me Jeff.

We’re all users here. No need to >dramatize< the issue. For the vast majority of users, it works fine. 😀

Did you try using Safe Boot? It works for many users. Another work around is to shop online using your Mac and place you items in the site’s shopping cart. The switch to your iPhone or iPad and just do the checkout with the mobile device. I agree, it’s not perfect, but it can resolve the issue, at least temporarily until an update makes it >just work<.

now after playing around with this, it seems, the position of the ApplePay Overlay on the display is relevant, which is anchored to the safari window it was opened in. And if i move around this safari window on the display, the fingerprint icon disappears and reappears again =/ very odd...
