Issues launching Microsoft Word 2016 on M1 MacBook Pro

I am trying to launch my copy of Microsoft Word 2016 on my M1 MacBookPro (2021). It crashed the first time I started it, but I was able to go through the first-time setup process afterwards. When completing the setup, it crashed again, and it won't start anymore.

Other useful information:

  • The application is x86_64, and runs through Rosetta 2
  • I am 100% sure my computer is ARM64, it just says "x86" in the crash log because of Rosetta 2

And for anyone asking "Why not just use a newer version of Word?": Office 2016 is my favourite one, I cannot use a newer version.

Confusingly, every other Office 2016 application works (almost) flawlessly on my machine. And yes, I know that Office 2016 is out of support: if I didn't know that, I would've contacted Microsoft directly. I asked for help on this forum because I needed to solve a specific problem with a specific piece of software on my computer. I believe I have already provided all the necessary information needed to solve my problem. How do I make Word 2016 start without crashing?

Whether 2016 is your favorite, it maybe required by Microsoft for you to update to Office 365 so it is compatible with your device.

You can confirm when you contact Microsoft support.

Not every x86_64 application is supported by Rosetta 2 and Office 2016 for Mac was retired without support or product updates in Oct 2020 — before any M1 Macs were introduced. Even Office 2019 for Mac was retired in Oct 2023.

If you have an M1 MacBook Pro, you can run macOS Sonoma and hence, Office 2021 for Mac. You can also choose to use the free LibreOffice 2024.2.0.3 release as it is an MS Office clone. It also has an Apple Silicon build. Or even the paid Softmaker Office 2024 for Mac product. You have other options than Office 2016 for Mac.
