Apple Vision Pro - Face ID Ordering Requirement

So, I was going to order the Apple Vision Pro but then ran into the Face ID requirement. I do have many, many, Apple products, but I do not have a Face ID capable device so that prevented me from ordering the Apple Vision Pro. I also live 4.5 hrs. from the nearest Apple Store so I am not going to drive that far to get to an Apple Store if there is a possibility that the Apple Store could do an in-store Face ID scan. I then checked on what if would take to purchase a compatible Face ID device and figured, at a minimum if would cost me $700+ to purchase a Face ID iPhone or Face ID iPad so, I guess until Apple lightens up on their Face ID requirement, I am screwed. Thanks.

We stopped the purchase of 3 glasses because of this; there is no way we are spending $3.5k on each device to start with this nonsensical restriction.

Xreal glasses do as much as these glasses for only 20% of the price. Also, Quest 3 doesn't lock you in either.

Xreal 2 Ultra will do more for less...

You can use a friend's Face ID device. They have to be signed into iCloud, but you don't have to be signed in on their device. You can start the order on your Mac and then borrow an iPhone/iPad Pro to do the scan.

An Apple rep told me otherwise, causing me to go (temporarily?) buy a stupid Face ID device, but I confirmed firsthand that it is not necessary; a borrowed one works fine.

Your order page shows a QR-ish code that their camera app will transfer to their Apple Store app. The measurements are transmitted back to the session on your Mac. I dunno why this information wasn't made clear by Apple but whatevs.

Thanks for the reply!! Unfortunately, none of our friends have a Face ID device either. So, ordered a used unlocked iPhone 12 Mini off of Amazon for $265, ugh. My wife will upgrade her iPhone 7 to the iPhone 12 Mini. But, it won't be here until next Thursday so I don't know how far out the pre-orders will be by then. I saw on YouTube that if you order the Vision Pro today it will be mid-March 2024 before it will ship. Frustrating.

I wouldn’t necessarily say that this is Apple being an evil company. Obviously, they do like their closed ecosystem, but that is not why you have to use a Face ID enabled device. They use it to measure out your face! They use something called a true depth sensor, which iPhones without Face ID don’t have. Therefore, it is not possible to use a phone without Face ID to complete such a scan.
