Storage in Mac Studio.

Alright, my storage used to be 2 or 300 gigs. One day it said I had like 15 gigs free. I was confused. I put some stuff on Blu-Ray. But files not apps. Then I looked and the apps went from 1.5 tb to 1.3. Which I did not get. I didn't uninstall apps. Alright, it showed I was using 1.37tbs in applications. 1.23 in iCloud. I turned iCloud off, thinking that would give me the space it showed being used. But then, it shows I am using 135.69 gb in applications, 55 gigs in documents, 7.86 in messages, 3.28 in music creation and 1.68tb in system data. But that cannot be right can it. For some reason, something is making my Mac. show that I am using a large amount of data. When iCloud is on its apps. When it's off it's system data. I have no idea what it means.

I tried setting something up at the Apple store. But no matter what I did, it only gave me the choice of chat or email.

Anyone have an idea as to what is going on.

for general 'where did my storage go' questions, I often refer to the FREE Utilities mentioned in this article:

What is “Other” storage on a Mac, and how… - Apple Community

despite some of the names, none of these Utilities removes ANYTHING automatically or 'behind your back' you need to use and Admin user, and wait as long as a quarter hour for all results to show up.

I've only been using my Studio for about 2 month now and have run into the same issues with storage. My culprit is Final Cut Pro, it creates a huge amount of temp files (transcode, or something like that is the Apple name) that consumes a lot of storage. Within the first 2 week of use I watched over 2TB of available storage vanish on my Studio that I couldn't account for, the source files were just over 500GB for the 2 projects I was working on.

This is a housekeeping issue, you'll need to go into the applications you are using and purge any temp files they are creating. Very annoying to have to do this. Having worked with PCs for 4 decades I'm finding this a step backwards, but again only working in the Mac environment for just over 2 months I could be missing a lot on how this is better maintained.

So, after reading what you two said, I thought I would delete all my apps. I first went to the Apple store. They let me set something up so I could bring my Mac in next week. I have a youtube channel. I thought it would be fun to put the adventure on there. I start recording. I turned iCloud off yesterday. Then back on. I look down at storage now and it says 1.28 tb available of 2tb. So what in the **** happened. The only thing I can think is that it was something with iCloud. It is so strange.

It shows Applications -- 161.4 gb, Documents 55.53 gb, iCloud Drive 31.63 gb, mail 1.21gb, messages, 7.86gb, music creation 3.29 gb, photos 453.3 mb, Podcasts 68.3 mb, Other Users & Shared 1.07gb, MacOS 18.59 gb and System Data 422.78 gb.
