Quicktime player causes mac to be unresponsive

When I watch MP4 videos on quicktime player, it often causes my mac to become unresponsive. Everything on the screen freezes, the mouse no longer moves, and (command - option - escape) doesn't bring up the force quit application window. Currently the only way I can fix it is holding the power button until the mac shuts off. It seems to happen right after pausing, or clicking a button in quicktime player. Is this a known problem and is there any better solution? I'm using a 2021 M1 macbook pro running Sonoma. Thank you
