For the past week or two, I've been nearly countless messages from new sites on facebook that I haven't the slightest interest in. Wrestling: Really? Must I go through facebook to fix that or is there something I can do before that? I'm spending too long every day blocking the sites.

Yes, you must go through Facebook and provide feedback to them. Facebook is getting paid to promote those sites to you. They are using you as a tool to generate profit for themselves and that is how they make money.
