Cannot open old Keynote and Pages documents

Hi! I have been cleaning up my Mac and discovered that I can no longer open old Keynote (circa 2017) and Pages (circa 2019) documents. I receive a message that reads "Pages (or Keynote) couldn’t read the file. You can try restoring to a previous version." I assume this is because these documents were created on a version of the software that is no longer compatible with the current version. Is there anyway to open these documents or are they lost forever? I'm fuming as these are things my kids created when they were small :( Why do Apple sometimes have to make things so difficult??!!

Older Pages or Keynote documents, unless damaged, should open in same or newer versions of these applications. If the documents are damaged, then you are done with them, unless you can open them in the free LibreOffice 7.6.4 (requires macOS Catalina or later), then save them as Word .docx (or Powerpoint .pptx) documents to be opened in Pages or Keynote respectively.
