How to turn off Audio in Messages

The turn on dictation suggestion in ranked answer from this thread How can I disable voice message feature? - Apple Community Worked...!

This is achievable simply by tapping in the reply box to open the keyboard then tapping the microphone on the keyboard. I just did it on my iPhone with iOS 17.1.2

For me, the thing that fixed this was turning on “enable dictation” in the keyboard settings. I’m not sure why it was disabled, but that immediately replaced the squiggly red with the microphone.

Press the plus sign and press and hold the "audio" and drag it down into the "more" area and it will go away. It makes the squiggly lines you posted turn into a microphone which just does the voice to text feature, not the stupid audio message.

I don't have a microphone icon on the keyboard.

Did not work on my iPhone 14. Does not matter where I put the word Audio. I haven't seen a mic in a few years, either; probably because I turned Siri and Dictation off.

Thank you so much!!! I think this is still too new for everyone to understand what I am talking about. You hit the nail on the head! All other instructions were explaining how to get rid of other voice actions. I don't want to get rid of anything. I just wanted to stop the Audio Text Messages.

Doesn't work on ios18; no microphone on keyboard

For me is better to have the mic 🎤 in that spot, then the Voice sound recording on your texts. Turn off, then, turn on Enable Dictation under settings/keyboard. You will see the mic replacing the voice recording icon.
