No sharing option in Find My app, despite Apple’s documentation.

Apple’s documentation says it’s easy to share AirTag tracking with other people. Just choose “Add Person” under “Sharing” for that item in the Find My app. But there is definitely nothing whatsoever in my Find My apps for sharing. Now, my iPhone is admittedly an antique iPhone 7+, but my iPad is a pretty new 8th gen, and both are running the latest iOS. There doesn’t seem to be any mention in the docs about not being able to share on older devices (presumably as long as they’re running the current OS).

Can anybody shed some light on this mystery?

Although it's not mentioned in the "What's new with iOS17" section of the documentation, comparing it with the docs for iOS 16 suggests that it's a new feature added to iOS 17. Both my devices were telling me they were up to date, but "up to date" meant 15.7 on my phone and 16.6.1 on my pad. Looks like my phone won't ever get to go past iOS 15, since there's no option to upgrade in Settings, but it appears my pad might get to have 17.0.3. We'll see if that solves the mystery.

Yes. Not compatible with the precision locating function, which I already knew. Are you deliberately being dumb about this? My phone works just fine with AirTags. And, again, my iPad is compatible, so the fact that I have an iPhone 7+ has nothing to do with why the option to share wasn't visible. What matters is that the sharing option doesn't exist unless one has iOS 17 or higher installed.

I believe you have to enable Family Sharing for an AirTag to be shared on multiple devices before IOS 17. You'll also most likely have to add iCloud+ for more storage. Otherwise, others that are near your tag that you don't include in your Family Sharing will get the alert that they're being followed, and they can only pause it for 24 hours. After IOS 17 you can share the AirTags with up to 5 more devices. iPhone 15 or newer is required for precise location.

That document tells me that "if you’re using a supported iPhone, you can find its precise location." It does not say that using an "unsupported iPhone" (which is any iPhone <11) loses access to other features.

Looking at the iPad equivalent document, it reads almost the same, except there's no mention of precise locations, and no mention of "supported" or "unsupported" iPads.

Yea and your iphone 7 isn't included in the supported iphone, thus making it not compatible.
