Airtag beeping sometimes. Why is that?

I have an airtag that I put it in my small child's school backpack. it is paired and set up to my iphone.

When my child came home from the bus today, my child's teacher aid asked me "what is this" while holding it in her hand. She said she found this in his backpack and that it was beeping in the classroom.

Now I didn't do anything. I didn't report is lost or did anything on" find my" app on my iphone at home.

I didn't get a chance to ask her how long did they hear the beep.

My question is, is this supposed to beep when it is away from me in his backpack at school? How long do they beep? Anyway to turn off the beeping?

Also once in a while, sometimes even at home where the bagpack is and where my iphone is, i could hear beep from the backpack. doesn't beep all the time at home but it does beep abour two or three times at home sometimes when we have the backpack at home with me.

thanks

That can't be true, I have a set of 4 air tags paired with my iPhone and they are literally sitting within 5 feet of my phone and one is beeping. So it's not out of range of the phone. So your explanation can't be true

I have a key fob on my work keys with an air tag in it so I know where they are and can find them if needed.

Some mornings (Not all) when I'm heading out I'll get close to where my keys are (With phone in hand) and the tag will randomly play some electronic version of a cricket chirping. It's not loud at all, in fact you can barely hear it even when the whole house is silent. I never hear it making that noise when my phone is on the other side of the house. Like i said, it doesn't always do it, so if it's a "Here I am" alert when it makes contact with my phone, then it needs some work. Just an annoyance really, but it's so quiet I doubt someone would hear it if you put it in someone's car bumper to track them so if that's the reasoning behind it, that's another fail. Also replaced the batteries and it does the same thing.

I have same issue. It does not happen often which makes it harder to track down...

I live in an apt. bldg. and I think the sound it is playing is the "Unknown Airtag is following you" sound.

I'm thinking my neighbor's iPhone is picking up my tag and then thinking it is following HIM????

I don't have it figured out yet... but this may help:

Sounds made by airtags:   https://youtu.be/c0TVHPHRjXg

I have an interesting related issue ... Or at least I think it is. I live in a small 1 bedroom apt. in a multistory building.

I have an airtag on my keys and every once in a while it will sound off with the

"unknown airtag is traveling with you" sound.

I do NOT get any notifications on my phone when this happens.

I am thinking that perhaps one of my neighbor's iPhones is close enough to my airtag that the airtag thinks it is actually traveling with my neighbor ??? .... even though it's just sitting in my entry hall?

Is there another explanation? Any ideas on how to get it to shut up?

Thanks,

Jim

"It is not meant to track people or pets, but to help you locate a missing item." What if your pet is missing, or your child? That is a big reason people purchase these. I put one in our car, (in case it goes missing) and on several instances the air tag will make a sound as we are driving down the ally away from our house. Not every time we leave home, but randomly. One thing I have wondered is because it was set up at our home, and uses that location for some reason. We purchased one for our son to attach to his dog's collar because she once escaped and was lost. Luckily he found her. He set the dog's air tag at his home, but we have been keeping his dog because their fence was damaged and she could escape. When he comes to visit her, he has told us sometimes his phone will alert him he has left her behind. This happens by it's self. In my reference the phone is in the same car as the air tag and it will sometimes make a tone.

I have two devices in my most expensive cars. Always I start to drive it also start beeping. My first idea was thats fine it says Hello to owner. But NO. It’s beeping when my girlfriend drives alone with kids. So it also say Hello Thief I’m somewhere here to track you🤦‍♂️ Really BAD when it can’t to be silent.

My airtags make the chirping sound and it sets off an alarm that sound like the Verizon ringtone on my Iphone XR almost every time I sit at our dinner table. And this is with the ringer TURNED OFF. It is horrible. It will occasionally do this in my car causing an accident hazard as my phone will not stop ringing until I wake it up and swipe up on the screen. HORRIBLE!
