There is supposed to be a button to the left of the entry field in iMessage, which I can use to add files/pictures to a message. This button is missing. See the attached screenshot.

iMac (2017 – 2020)
There is no "Shared" under Preferences. When I click on Messages, then Preferences, a dialogue opens which just has the tabs "General" and "iMessage". Neither of them has an entry containing the word "Shared".
What version of macOS are you running (see the Apple Menu > About this Mac). On older versions of macOS there is no apps button, you can still copy and paste an image or drag the image file into the compose box to send a picture.
Yes. The Apps button was added in a later version of macOS. On the version you're running you'll have to copy & paste or drag the image into the textbox.
Messages menu -> Preferences -> Shared with you has to have items checked for the App menu to appear to the left of the message entry dialog.
Are you running Ventura? If you are then please post in the Ventura forum. The option "shared with you" is present in Monterey.
In Mojave no button, I just drag a pic or link to the text input field.

I had not expected that this (seemingly simple) feature of an application is dependent on the OS version ....
"Messages" does not have an "App" button. Can not insert pictures.
