I formatted the wrong desk and set it up for use for the time machine which is of course not my intension. I'd like to use the disk for other things but I can't figure out how to allow for other items to be put on that disk now... Help?
First remove it from the TM preference pane as the backup drive. Then you can erase and format to APFS to use normally.

Did you make sure you removed the drive to use as a TM backup from the TM pane. If it still believes it is a TM drive it will not let you format it.
You will need to reformat the disk for use.
Thank you, that's what I thought but after I put my password in once I have plugged the drive-in and I try to ease the disk I get this error
