one more 20w charger and mbp 16' question

Hello Community,

I saw a lot of questions here about charging mbp with a lower power charger, but how about operate it when mbp is fully charged?

I see my mbp m1 pro consume at average 10w of energy, so 20w adapter should work fine

but what about when it start to consume more? Will it damage somehow if charger cannot fulfill macbook power needs at some time points?

I feel I don’t need huge energy income, mbp drain battery very slow, even without charging usually it enough for a day. thus don’t want to take charger everywhere with me, 20w will be always enough just to keep it at 80%+

thank you

The recommended power adapter for current MacBook Pro 16-in model is the 140 watt model. This model also provides the ability to Fast Charge over MagSafe, regular charge using a 100 watts rated USB-C cable.

2019 model MacBook Pro 16-in featured a 96 Watt power adapter with USB-C only. This does not provide enough power for Fast Charging, and does not have MagSafe (required for proving power over 100 Watts limit of current USB-C cables).

Using a smaller USB-C power adapter (with USB-C Power Delivery) is not expected to cause damage, but may produce unexpected results.

--------

Your computer performs best when connected to AC power. It can use the full output of the Power Adapter AND when doing especially challenging work will also freely "borrow" power from the battery. In some cases, even with the power adapter connected, the charged state may even decline during stressful work.

When used only on battery, your computer has no extra cushion of power, and may perform more slowly. However, for ordinary non-stressful tasks this may not be objectionable (possibly not even noticeable.)

In general, you should ALWAYS connect AC power when it is possible to do so, and only run on batteries (which could be somewhat slower) when no AC sources are at hand. Your Mac will NEVER over-charge.
