How to use WD Elements 8TB to be used as Time Machine on my iMac Pro

Can I get advice on how to make the WD Elements USB disk to be my time machine for my iMac? Thanks for your directions. Jan 16 2023

Thanks for your help. Could you help me with one more question? I had a smaller 1TB disc before. Can I decommission this one, or do I need to do something special not to lose the previous backups? Should I somehow transfer the previous backups, if that is what is required to the new 8TB disk
