SIM failure

I made an appointment with apple support at 1:15 and it is now past 1:30 and I have not received a call.

We took it to Verizon who told us that this is a known issue with this phone after a recent ios upgrade, and it can't be fixed. Also tells us that they can't just use the eSim because that also was broken in the update. Only fix is to replace the phone. Both stories seem like total BS, so we are gonna take it to Apple, but can't get a genius appointment for 3 days. Has anyone heard of this?
