Catalina is version 10.15.x
The current version of Big Sur is 12.6
If you have the MacBook Air M1 2020, it does not support Catalina. Big Sur is the earliest macOS supported on it.

The MacBook Air 2020 has been updated to the present Monterey (as per the Settiing) My question is should it be updated again to the newest update?
Yes, I would update it to the current Monterey 12.6.
You can do that via Apple menu > About This Mac > Software update.
