Disable autosave in preview for Monterey

Previous solutions for disabling autosave for preview no longer seem to work for Monterey. I'm sure I'm not the only one with this problem, but I can't find a fix. Can anyone help please?

(In case anyone needs an explanation--I open a pdf and rotate it for viewing, but even if I undo the rotate it still preserves a modified time/date stamp--which subsequently screws up sorting the files in a directory.)

With macOS 12.4, there is no prevention for Preview performing an autosave on the local drive, whether the System Preferences > General > ☐ Ask to keep changes when closing documents is selected or not.

However, the current (2022.001.20142) version of Adobe Acrobat Reader DC does not autosave changes to the PDF. That might be the tool to use.
