Font suitcases?

My knowledge of fonts dates back to the OS9 days. Unfortunately, it hasn't been updated much since then.

I have a copy of FrizQuadrata from an archive/backup. It's got a suitcase icon. When I trigger Quick Look, it looks great; a nice, fullscreen window of all the characters comes up.

When I double click it, however, I get the clueless message:

There is no application set to open the document "FrizQuadrata Rm/Bd BT.tt"

Search the App Store for an application that can open this document, or choose an existing application on your computer_

[Choose Application...] [Cancel] [Search App Store]

I thought the way you install fonts on OS X is by double-clicking?

You have a Type 1 PostScript font. The suitcase, FrizQuadrata.t1 is the screen fonts, and the other item, FrizQua, is the matching vector outlines for the normal face (you're missing the bold outline, FrizQuaBol).

T1 PS fonts are just about dead. You can get that font to work by manually placing both items into the Fonts folder of your user account. Best is to keep them grouped together in a folder and then place that folder into the Fonts folder.

The other easier method is to place the font set on any other drive or partition that is NOT part of the startup drive. Then activate them in place (which means from where they reside and not copied to another location).

Remember, with T1 PS fonts, the suitcase and any outline fonts must be in the same folder in order for them to work.
