Apple store product didn't have the problem.
Several reddit threads address this. I cannot vouch for them but
apparently mine though Amazon were not Apple products or Mifi.
QUOTE:
"The reason behind this is in order to use the lightning jack on
iPhones your device must have a special chip made by Apple that has a
software key in it. In order to get this chip you need to get your
accessory approved by Apple which costs a ton of money to get Apple
certified. This chip is also required if you want to use Bluetooth
classic. So these earbuds probably are using BLE to talk to your
iphone."
I suspected they may be more Amazon counterfeits.

Hello wazoo1,
Thanks for reaching out to us in Apple Support Communities about your headphone not working with your iPhone. We're happy to help by looking into this more!
We see you’re coming from the article: If your headphones don't work with your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. That’s a great article for this issue! If you tried all the steps in that article and the issue continues, try your iPhone with a different set of headphones to see if the issue can isolated the actual headphones.
If you still have issues, reach out to Apple Support:
Hope this helps.
Best Regards.
USELESS
at best all you did was restate my question
WASTED TIME AND EFFORT ON MY PART
next time I'll just go to apple
Did you read the question and description?
Works with apple lightning headphones on both audio, phone and voice menu
tried 5 different adapters on the 3.5 socket, none working
headphones work with mic on Macbook
Is there a setting or is this odd adapter problem?
wazoo1,
Just to make sure we understand this correctly, your Apple Lightning headphones with mic work 100% "Works with apple lightning headphones on both audio, phone and voice menu" however if you use a Lightning to 3.5 mm adapter and headphones with a mic, the mic doesn't work, is this correct?
If this is what is happening, your best bet is to reach out to Apple Support:
Best Regards.
Correct.
Lightning plug earphones appear to work fully
Tested earphones with adapter: Sound with music apps
no sound or mic function on phone and voice memo.
Tested mic with adapter : no input to Voice app.
Odd that 4 of 4 new adapters would fail, though not unheard of.
Suspect software/settings.
no help online, hard to even find the question and troubleshooting menus are inadequate
Reloaded OS, reset phone.
3.5 sets working fine with phones with 3.5 socket
BT to phone works well in car
I got an adapter from OWC labeled as Genuine Apple and it works as expected. (w/ mic, no funky setup)
Has thinner wire and brushed appearing silver ring on 3.5mm jack
No clear Apple markings or numbers.
Cost 9.95 USD
It feels fragile compared to the ones from Amazon an eBay,
a bummer because it sits deep in my Otterbox case giving poor grip on plug.
I find BT to be a hassle due to interference and multiple devices, and like wired simplicity
and Lightning phones can't be used on other devices.
Real ace move , Apple.
