Can you successfully surf on Safari when you cannot reach your mail server? If not, then you know that the problem is in your internet connection and not in your mail service.

Check your internet connection. In Settings, tap on the WiFi network name. See if you have a warning message about failing to connect to the internet. If you do, then that is the problem to fix. Then check your Cellular Data connection and make sure it is healthy.

If you are trying to read email when you are away from WiFi connectivity, make sure that Mail has permission to use your Cellular Data to communicate. Good luck.
