Timemachine backup

I got a new seagate and time machine wants to erase it before backing up...I tried this a year ago with another new one and it ruined it....what do I do

iMac 21.5″, macOS 10.15

Allow TM to erase and reformat the drive. It's required.

Most new drives come preformatted for use with PCs. Time Machine cannot use that format scheme.

I cannot speak to why your previous drive failed, but this is necessary.
