I am fairly new to my mac. Do I need to scan and check for viruses and keep software up to date?

I have never scanned for viruses or installed any 3rd party antivirus or "cleaning" apps. See: https://www.apple.com/macos/security/

I do keep my system up to date.

Apple does not recommend any 3rd party software and only suggests keeping the system up to date.
