New iPhone 12 cannot send or receive my AOL email messages; my iMac and iPod send and receive Aol email messages OK.

Yesterday, I bought a new iPhone 12 Mini. After going through the basic setup process in the Apple store we had problems viewing my AOL email messages in the Apple Mail application. When trying to view messages in my Apple Mail Inbox, I receive an error stating there is a password problem and I am directed to "Settings" to correct it. When I enter my email account password, which works on my iMac and iPad, and click on "Done", I receive an error stating that no password was entered.

Today, I contacted Apple Support and described my problem, via Chat. They told me to download the latest iPone OS and that "should fix" the problem. Well, I downloaded the newest OS and it didn't fix the Apple Mail problem...the problem symptoms were the same as described, above.

Any ideas?

AOL now use 2-step authentication so most likely you’ll require an app specific password for the account on your iPhone 12. This is entered instead of the account password.

Hello hopefull52,

We understand that you're experiencing an issue sending and receiving email on your new iPhone, and we'd love to help however we can.

You mentioned that you updated your device; just to confirm, is your device running iOS 15.0.1 at this time? Find the software version on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod

"If Mail asks you to enter a password for your email account, make sure that your password is correct. To check your email address and password, sign in to your email provider's website.

If you still get a user name or password error, contact your email provider or system administrator." More about that under the "Check your email address and password" part of this page: If you can’t send email on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

For additional help with receiving email, please check out this link as well: If you can't receive email on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Thanks!

Hello and Thanks!

I followed the link you provided, and then followed AOL (Verizon's) instructions for enabling their 2-step authentication process and generating a unique password. It was a bit cumbersome to execute on a 12 Mini screen but I managed it. On my iPhone, the unique password had to be entered for Incoming (IMAP) as well as Outgoing (SMTP) before I was able to see emails in my Inbox and Sent folders.

Note: The reps in the Apple Store had no suggestions for solving this problem except "go home and try it again." I paid $150 for Apple iPhone support. Later, when I contacted them via Apple Support chat, they had no suggestion other than "load the latest iOS and that should fix the problem.

Anyway, thank you very much, again.

Thank you for your suggestions and the links you provided. I had checked them out, previously.

I did not want to try removing / deleting my original account because I was afraid of losing all of my prior emails. So, I tried creating a new account but I was unsuccessful, maybe because the original account was still active. I searched for AOL Help but they wanted me to subscribe to their Help service, although they did offer a free trial period, I declined.

I waited for another reply / suggestion and receive a helpful hint from Doctor9fan that solved the problem.
