Are original photos excluded from iPhone backup if on iCPL?

Hi, here https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT207428 it is said that photos are not back upped if iCloud Photo Library is active.

My question is: does this happen even if photos are stored on the iPhone in their original size?

Please consider iCloud Photo Library active.

Jet787,

You're welcome. You've mentioned how you're currently been downloading your photos by using a Mac and want confirmation that this is a good way to preserve the original size.

Check this out: Transfer photos and videos from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. This guide has every single way to download photos from your iOS devices and has great links under the "Learn more" section that does mention Time Machine too. This does confirm an additional way to transfer your photos by using your Mac. From what you described, you're doing great!

Take care!

Hello Jet787,

We can see you're using What does iCloud back up?, and have a question about backing up your photos.

To make sure we understand your question, we wanted to clarify what is in the guide you shared. If the photos are on your iPhone and you're not using iCloud Photo Library, they would be included in your iCloud backup. They are backed up in their current state when the backup is created.

If you're using iCloud Photo Library, the photos are not included in your iCloud backup as you've mentioned. We'd like you to check this out: Set up and use iCloud Photos. We'd want you to focus in on "Download your photos and videos from iCloud.com" as it tells you how to keep the original way the photo was captured if you'd like. If you're concerned about a photo that you'd always like to have, make sure to preserve it in a download or backup.

You've also mentioned you'd like to leave feedback for Apple. To do this, use the link: Product Feedback - Apple

We hope this helps!

Thanks for you help.

May I ask a clarification please about keeping a backup instead of only iCloud photos.

You mention to download photos from iCloud to see them in original size.

What I am doing is to download on my MacBook Pro in original size, Time Machine my Mac SSD and keep my Mac photo library backupped via Time Machine. Can you confirm that this is another efficient and safe way to keep original photos' backup instead of downloading them from iCloud via web?

Thank you.
