All iMovie projects gone after Big Sur update

To state the obvious. . . . you need to search your Mac and the easiest way is as follows:-

1. In the Apple menu at the top left of the screen select "About This Mac".
2. Select "Storage" and click the "Manage" button.
3. Wait a few minutes while your Mac catalogues everything and you will be left with a window like below.
4. At the left you have a series of headings like "Applications", "Documents" etc. Start by clicking on Documents and then select the "Size" column ensuring that the largest files are at the top.
5. You should then be able to spot anything big like an iMovie Library.

You can then either double-click it to open it in iMovie or click "Show in Finder" to see where it is residing.

Go to your Movies folder (Go/Home/Movies) and confirm that you are looking in the correct library, the one that contains all of your projects.

Neither the iMovie app nor the iMovie library is part of the operating system. So updating the OS should not have caused loss of iMovie data.

The correct path from the Finder menu to the iMovie Backups folder is as follows:

Go/Home/Library/Containers/com.apple.iMovieApp/Data/Library/Caches/iMovieBackups

Try the above path and see if you have success.

I think that you might benefit from talking with the techs at Apple Support. They have the capability of remotely accessing your computer that we cannot do here. If you want to go that route click on the Get Support item in the upper right hand corner of this forum’s screen. Navigate to a place where you can enter your phone number.

I had read your post carefully. From the file path that you gave I was not certain that you were going to the correct space.

Did you take up my suggestion to call Apple Support? If so, what did they say?

Do you keep a Time Machine backup, or other backup of your iMovie library? You should be able to recover your iMovie library from there.

THANK YOU!!! This helped me find a library from June. (The same thing happened to me...presumably after iOS upgrade, but I hadn't notice because I hadn't looked into iMovie in a while!) It's currently loading into iMovie and I see that at least some stuff is coming back. PHEW. Looks like both the "media" and "projects" tab are populated.

Hello, how will I be able to restore deleted videos on my iPhone? I updated iMovie and it deleted all my projects.
